After rotating back to the states in December 66 from Vietnam I was assigned to 5thReconBn @ Camp Horno in March 67 October 67 & transfer'd to Kaneoe Recon went to Scout/Sniper school and Markmanship Inst. School. Left with 1/27 on the USS Bexar to Danang after Tet broke out. Tranfer'd to HqCo27thMarRegt Scout/Sniper Plt. Joined 1/27 north of Hue city in Mar 68 and was on Operation "No Name" on April 13 68. Saw SSgt Fred Hayes KIA from 5th ReconBn back @ Horno along with about 30+ other brave Marines. In May 68 sent to hook up with I 3/27 @ GaNoi island and to begin Operation Allenbrook. After about a week or so of some incredible fire fights on the island I think back and reflect how bad India 3/27 overcame those terrible days (Very Hot)and the air strikes. Some how survive that one after a week or so. On July 21 I was attached on a patrol w/K 3/27 near some railroad tracks and was wounded by a land mine and walk away from that one. I refused to be Medivac'd. Rotated back to Margarita Sept 68 w/HqCo27thMarand worked at WeaponsTraining Bn as a marksmanship instr. Steve Austin was from my home town, as was Larry Walker. Both killed in Viet Nam. This site and memorial are exceptional. Thank you. Our friends are not to be forgotten. And prayers for the surviving family members continue.
Thank you for this site. It is respectful and befitting.
